Definition Name The process of dialing a phone number via a pay phone via a toll free for freephone access number. Dial around has the effect of reducing the toll charges that may be collected by a pay telephone. This figure shows how dial-around access occurs for pay telephones. This diagram shows that a caller is using a calling card with a toll free number on a pay telephone. The use of toll-free (or freephone) numbers on a pay telephone allows a caller to place the call without using any coins or payment cards on the pay telephone. The call is routed to the calling card center where the calling card account is decreased based on the amount of usage. This diagram shows that the calling card charges may be substantially less than the charges available to the caller when directly dialing through the local telephone company. This ability to dial-around reduces the pay telephone revenue to the owner of the public telephone. The owner of the public telephone may be the local telephone company or an independent company.
